Procter & Gamble CREA teamed with Domini Social Investments to co-lead a group of faith-based shareholders and investment managers who met with Procter & Gamble representatives on the issue of Fair Trade coffee. Procter & Gamble is one of the five major coffee companies world-wide. The shareholders worked along with Oxfam America, Co-op America and the Interfaith Fair Trade Initiative on this issue. Months of negotiations with the company and the filing of a shareholder resolution led to the company's decision to offer a Fair Trade Coffee product as of September 2003. This product is in the Millstone line and is Mountain Moonlight Fair Trade Certified coffee. It was first offered only on-line. In 2004 the company began to make the coffee available in stores. Work on the Fair Trade issue clearly demonstrates the beneficial effects of collaborative work among organizations to bring about positive change. Now it is up to the consumers to show companies that they are willing to pay an honest price so that poor farmers receive just payment for their products. |
